Which Courts Handle Family Law Matters?
From 1975 onwards, the Family Court of Australia dealt with all Family Law matters.
To help share the busy workload of Family Law matters, the Federal Magistrates Service (now called the Federal Circuit Court of Australia) started handling these matters from 2000 onwards.
The Federal Circuit Court now handles most Family Law matters and the Family Court deals only with complicated or unusual cases.
The Federal Circuit Court is now extremely busy and there are lengthy delays in getting dates for hearing.
